Lintel beam, purpose, and types

A lintel beam is a structural component that is used to support the weight of a building or a part of a building, such as a doorway or a window, over an opening or span. 

It is a horizontal beam that is placed across the top of the opening and is designed to transfer the weight of the structure above it to the vertical supports on either side of the opening.

Purpose of lintel beams

1. Load-bearing

Lintel beams are designed to bear the weight of the structure above the opening they span. Without a lintel beam, the weight of the structure could cause the opening to collapse.

2. Distribution of load

Lintel beams distribute the weight of the structure evenly across the vertical supports on either side of the opening. This helps to prevent concentrated stress points, which could cause damage to the structure.

3. Structural strength

Lintel beams provide stability to the structure by preventing the opening from sagging or shifting. This helps to maintain the overall structural strength of the building.

4. Safety

RCC Lintel
