Vacuum Dewatered Flooring or (VDF flooring)

Vacuum-dewatered flooring, also known as VDF flooring, is a flooring system that is commonly used in industrial, commercial, and residential construction. It is a type of concrete flooring that is created using a specialized process that involves the use of a vacuum pump.

Process of VDF flooring

The VDF flooring process starts by laying a concrete mix on the sub-base of the floor. The concrete mix is then spread evenly over the surface using a screed board. 

After this, a vacuum pump is used to suck out the excess water and air from the surface of the concrete, leaving behind a denser and more compacted layer. 

This process helps to improve the strength, durability, and finish of the concrete.

Once the vacuum dewatering process is complete, the concrete is left to cure and harden. The surface of the concrete is then polished using a power trowel or a mechanical polisher to create a smooth and level surface.

Cost of VDF flooring

The cost of VDF flooring ranges from INR 70 to 120 per square foot in India.

Application of vacuum dewatering flooring

1. Industrial flooring: VDF flooring is commonly used in industrial settings, such as factories, warehouses, and manufacturing plants, due to its durability, strength, and resistance to wear and tear.

2. Commercial flooring: It is also used in commercial settings, such as retail stores, offices, and restaurants, due to its clean and polished look, low maintenance requirements, and ability to withstand high foot traffic.

3. Institutional flooring: It is suitable for institutional settings, such as schools, hospitals, and government buildings, due to its hygienic properties, resistance to stains and chemicals, and ease of maintenance.

4. Residential flooring: It is also used in residential settings, particularly in areas that require durable and low-maintenance flooring, such as garages, basements, and outdoor living spaces.

5. Sports flooring: It is commonly used in sports facilities, such as gymnasiums, arenas, and tennis courts, due to its ability to withstand heavy impact, abrasion, and foot traffic.

6. Outdoor flooring: It is ideal for outdoor applications, such as parking lots, sidewalks, and driveways, due to its resistance to moisture, chemicals, and stains.

7. Airport runways and taxiways: It is suitable for use on airport runways and taxiways, due to its high strength, durability, and resistance to wear and tear.

3. Noise level: It can be noisy underfoot due to its density and hardness.

4. Limited availability of skilled installers: It requires skilled installers, which can be a limiting factor in some regions.

5. Cold underfoot: It can be cold underfoot, making it uncomfortable in colder climates.

6. Cracking: It can be susceptible to cracking if the subfloor is not properly prepared.

7. Limited design options: It has limited design options compared to other types of flooring systems.
